2012 Virginia Constitutional Amendment
Ernie Padgette
Virginia Attorney General, and Arlington-Fairfax Chapter member, Ken Cuccinelli has long championed an amendment to the Virginia Constitution which would prevent governments from seizing property such as our chapter property through the improper use of power under “eminent domain” simply to increase tax revenue or indeed for any reason other than true public use. When we vote on November 6th, we will have the opportunity to vote for an amendment to the Virginia Constitution. This amendment will “require that eminent domain only be exercised where the property taken or damaged is for public use and, except for utilities or the elimination of a public nuisance, not where the primary use is for private gain, private benefit, private enterprise, increasing jobs, increasing tax revenue, or economic development”.
The Arlington-Fairfax Chapter believe this amendment is a very good thing for our chapter, and indeed all similar properties; and may well protect our property from seizure in the future. We encourage our members to view this proposed amendment carefully and thoughtfully, and to vote accordingly.
